  1. Casa González

Our history traces back to 1931.

Vicente González Ambit, major shop assistant at La Mallorquina, decided to set up his own business in this establishment of calle León, in which the back room was the family home.

González began to turn the establishment into a specialist shop for high quality Murcian cold meats, groceries and Manchego cheeses among others. However, grandfather Vicente became wrapped up in the twists and turns of the Civil War and was even imprisoned. After the turbulent years of the conflict, Casa González became a purveyor for the select society of Madrid in these days, serving everyone from Ortega and Gasset to the ancient aristocracy of the era.

  2. A new generation

    end of the 1990s

By the end of the nineties, the second generation of owners gave way to the founder’s nephews and nieces, who decided to renovate Casa González so that it was no longer just a shop, but a degustation restaurant with gourmet products.

  3. Today, we are proud of our emblematic establishment, whose picture window has become one of the most prized in the neighbourhood of Las Letras.

Here you can savour a glass of wine, a beer or a coffee... All this in a peaceful atmosphere, where you can take your time to taste our tapas and toasted breads, while you’re connected to the Internet or sharing the moment with some friends. We believe that we can celebrate our traditions without renouncing technology.

    Come and see for yourself.

Your home

You will find us on calle del León, right in the heart of Barrio de las Letras (the Literary Quarter). The neighbourhood’s name is in homage to the literary greats of the Spanish Golden Age (Cervantes, Quevedo and Lope de Vega among others) who lived here.

Even today, the area has a high concentration of intellectuals and a myriad of people are attracted by its vibrant nightlife and its closeness to the main museums , as well as to such emblematic places as the Plaza de Santa Ana, the Convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians, where Cervantes’ remains have been laid to rest, or the Lope de Vega House Museum.

There are frequently events in the area, such as street theatre, concerts, little market stalls, etc.

“One of the locals’ favourite places in the neighbourhood is the Mercado de las Ranas. On the first Saturday of every month, the merchants in the area take their products onto the streets, adorn their shop windows and offer special promotions while concerts and street theatre liven up the atmosphere.“
